Operation Shoebox, out of the starting gate!

Two tractor trailers arrive from port, carrying toys for Operation Shoebox 2015. Some pallets contain finished boxes others are packed with bulk items for boxes that will be filled and distributed right here in the Mercy Wings hangar. No time like the present to get these boxes of toys ready to distribute. It’s a big job, and many hands are helping. Not to mention the 63 member team arriving in …

The Unexpected

Bomberos (Fire Fighters) of Quetzaltenango (Xela) respond to an aviation mishap, 20 November 2015. This time of year, as the clouds and rain of the wet season diminish, and almost proportionally, flight operations are on the increase up here in the western highlands of Guatemala.  The three on-board this air craft, though gravely injured, survived. As you can see from the photo, the aircraft was totally destroyed. The exact cause …

Thanksgiving day will soon be upon us

In the life of every missionary there are special days, like when there is spiritual awakening and maturing, of the people within you circle of influence. Perhaps, as Thanksgiving draws near, for American missionaries laboring in Guatemala, there may be a special “infilling” of the natural kind. We look forward to sharing a traditional meal with fellow missionaries, friends, and invited guests on Thanksgiving Day! Very much by accident, two years …

A day to celebrate!

Plenty of smiles to go around this day. Traditionally in Guatemala, a graduation is a time to celebrate in grand style. The day will be served up with extra helpings of Pomp and Circumstance. Students of the LWT/BI in Quetzaltenango assemble for one large commemorative photo that will mark this passing. In just about an hour, formal processions will take place as every graduate will piously enter a large auditorium and …

Hot, hot, hot- Tecun Uman, San Marcos- Ayutla

The October, Living Water Teaching (LWT), medical campaign has come and gone, all in the span of 10 days. We maintain hope that our actions and ministry to the people, sewed seed of an eternal nature. To bring medical services and ministry to 2300 people takes prayer, planning, and more prayer. Every LWT employee, missionary, volunteer, and U.S. team member, brings something to the mix. All who participate are united …

The fix is in

After some intensive research, collaboration, and phone calls this problem is a thing of the past. The persistent oil leak had been coming from this oil seal that had de-bonded from the circular recess just behind the crankshaft flange. With replacement parts available, bonding and de-bonding chemicals available, and special tools, this job takes maybe half a day. This job, on the field, in Guatemala…………..well that’s another story.

A day to remember…..every two years that is

Flight operations in Guatemala are not for everyone. In the world of aviation, there’s flying, and then there’s flying. By comparison, flying in North America provides some pleasingly wide boundaries when it comes to flight planning, decision-making, and system management. Cast your gaze in just about any direction, and it is likely you’ll find a runway with fuel, maintenance facilities, control tower, and restaurant. Not so when it comes to Guatemala. …

Shocking News!!!!

After 25 years the electrical system of the Mercy Wings International hangar is in dire need of some repairs and upgrades. Flickering lights, popping circuit breakers, shocking faucets, and smoking wires, have gotten our attention. Here in Guatemala, it is typical to use less than sufficient gauge wire to support an ever modified and increasing electrical load. Several estimates were ordered, with the most reasonable cost for the project being …
